30-60-90 Day Plan for a New Job: A Personal Guide for New Hires

A 30-60-90 day plan for a new job breaks your first three months into three phases: learn in days 1-30, contribute in days 31-60, and lead in days 61-90. This guide shows what to do and track in each phase, plus a free template.

A 30-60-90 day plan is a structured roadmap for your first three months in a new role. Use days 1-30 to learn, days 31-60 to contribute, and days 61-90 to lead. Each phase has a clear focus, so you always know what to work on and how to measure your progress.

You got the job. Now what?

If you are like most people, you are excited and terrified at the same time. You want to prove yourself fast. You do not want to make mistakes. And you have no idea what you are actually supposed to do in your first 90 days.

That is where a plan comes in.

I have been a recruiter for over a decade. I have hired hundreds of people. I can tell you within the first two weeks who is going to succeed and who is going to struggle. The difference is almost never talent. It is whether they have a plan.

Here is the 30-60-90 day plan I wish every new hire had when they walked through the door on day one.

What Is a 30-60-90 Day Plan?

A 30-60-90 day plan is a document that outlines your goals and actions for your first 30, 60, and 90 days in a new job. Each 30-day phase has a different focus:

  • Days 1-30: Learn, listen, and observe.
  • Days 31-60: Contribute, connect, and build.
  • Days 61-90: Lead, deliver, and prove.

This is not a corporate onboarding checklist. This is your personal success plan. You build it for yourself, not for your employer.

The plan matters because the early window moves fast. In any given year, about one in five workers has been with their current employer for a year or less, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The first few months decide whether you settle in and grow, or whether you start over again.

Days 1-30: Learn, Listen, and Orient

Your first 30 days are not about doing the most work. They are about learning how the place works.

What to focus on:

Understand the culture. How do people communicate? Is it Slack or email? Are meetings formal or casual? Who actually makes decisions versus who seems to make decisions? Watch and listen before you form opinions.

Build relationships. Meet everyone on your team. Then meet people outside your team. Ask them what they do, how your role interacts with theirs, and what they wish someone in your position knew on day one.

Clarify expectations. Ask your manager: "What does success look like for me at day 30, 60, and 90?" Make note of their answer. This is your north star.

Map the landscape. Who are the key stakeholders? Who do you need to collaborate with? Who has influence? Start building a mental map of how things get done.

What to track:

Every day, log one thing you learned and one win you had. Even if the win is small. "Figured out the expense reporting system" counts. "Introduced myself to the head of sales" counts.

You will not remember these at day 90. I guarantee it. Write them down.

Days 31-60: Contribute and Connect

Now you start adding value. You know where the bathroom is. You know who does what. It is time to contribute.

What to focus on:

Own your first project. Find something you can take from start to finish. It does not need to be huge. It needs to be visible. You want your manager to see you deliver.

Set boundaries. It is tempting to say yes to everything in your first 60 days. Do not. You will burn out. Learn to say "let me check my capacity and get back to you" instead of an automatic yes.

Deepen key relationships. You met a lot of people in your first 30 days. Now pick 3-5 people to build real relationships with. Grab coffee. Ask for advice. Be genuinely curious about their work.

Ask for feedback. Do not wait for your 90-day review to find out how you are doing. Ask your manager at day 45: "What is one thing I could do differently?" This shows initiative and gives you time to course-correct.

What to track:

Keep logging wins. But now also start connecting your wins to the success criteria your manager gave you in the first 30 days. Are you hitting the day 60 expectations? What is missing?

Days 61-90: Lead and Grow

This is where you prove your value. You are not new anymore. You are a contributing team member with a track record.

What to focus on:

Deliver your quick win. You should have one clear, measurable accomplishment by day 90. Something you can point to and say "I did that." It does not need to change the company. It needs to matter.

Build a roadmap for the next quarter. What comes after day 90? Present your manager with a plan for the next 90 days. This puts you ahead of 90% of employees who wait to be told what to do next.

Request your 90-day review. Do not wait for them to bring it up. You ask for it. Come prepared with your win log, your accomplishments, and your next-quarter plan.

Walk in with receipts. Your 90-day review is not a vibe check. It is a performance evaluation. Bring documented evidence of what you accomplished, what you learned, and what you are focused on next.

How do you track your 30-60-90 day plan?

You can do this in a spreadsheet. You can do it in a notebook. You can do it in a notes app.

Or you can use Soar90, the app I built to automate this entire process.

Soar90 gives you a structured 30-60-90 day plan with daily tasks, milestone tracking, and a win log. A one-tap report then turns your wins into a review-ready summary. It is $9.99 one-time. No subscription.

What are the most common 30-60-90 day plan mistakes?

The most common ones are doing too much early, not tracking wins, waiting for feedback, and never asking for the review.

Trying to do too much in the first 30 days. Your first month is for learning, not for proving. If you are pushing hard on delivery before you understand the culture, you will make mistakes.

Not tracking wins. This is the biggest mistake I see. People do great work in their first 90 days but have nothing to show for it at review time. They scramble through emails trying to remember what they did in week 3. Start logging wins on day one.

Waiting for feedback. Most managers are busy. They will not give you feedback unless you ask. Ask early and ask often. "How am I doing?" is a perfectly good question at day 30 and day 60.

Not asking for the 90-day review. If your company does not schedule one, you request it. This is your career. Advocate for yourself.
